Why it always rains on 24 April
It rained profusely on 24 April 2015. The day hundreds of thousands silently walk up the hill of Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan. A slugging, continuous flow of people with flowers in their hand. Every year on this particular date the Armenian genocide is commemorated at the national memorial site. But for many Armenians every day is a memorial day as they always carry the stories and the consequences of the tragedy with them. Survivors have lost their loved ones, their lives and their land. In 1915 they have lost their home. Since then Armenians have become scattered around the globe. They live with their losses and commemorate already for a century. Every year, every day, they remember and demand. They demand recognition of the truth and repose of the souls of 1.5 million men, women and children that perished.
This year's centennial commemoration at Tsitsernakaberd was not much different from the years before; there were maybe more people, more flowers. There was more security, and there was definitely more rain…
