Most sites in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are guided and dominated by a certain religious communities. They perform their rituals  and regulate the vast stream of pilgrims and visitors, day after day, year after year. This makes that most people don’t have any personal time at the various sites in the Church, no place to rest or contemplate. But there is one place, right at the entrance (and exit) of the Church that is public space: the stone of unction (where Jesus was laid out and prepared for his burial). My favorite spot. Here a variety of people feel somehow the need to touch the stone, take a moment of contemplation or simply rub on it every single souvenir they bought in Jerusalem. They take (a lot of) pictures, or pose for one…
