Merelots or ‘Day of the Dead’ in the Armenian tradition follows the major religious holidays, in particular the Monday of Easter (being the major religious holiday). It is a day when families get together to visit the graves of their deceased, and priests will pray over them. Merelots is generally not seen as a day of mourning, this day cemeteries become a place of celebration. The graves are cleaned, fresh flowers are brought. Incenses are burned on the graves and people extensively toast on those who have passed away.
Pictures are taken on the cemeteries of Gai and Etchmiadzin, Monday after Easter 2011.
